In 1962, David Merrick invited seven people (who happened to have the same names as seven major theatre critics) to see Subways Are For Sleeping and then wined and dined after the performance. Afterward he asked them what they thought and, of course, since they’d been treated so well, they offered their praise. Merrick used their quotes and their given names (as well as photos of the seven individuals) on advertisements to ignite sales for what was otherwise a lackluster box office. The theatre critics were, allegedly, FURIOUS but Merrick hadn’t technically done anything wrong.
Now, 52 years later, Taco Bell has taken a page of David Merrick’s playbook with this commercial for their new breakfast menu. They filmed 25 real-life Ronald McDonalds enjoying their new breakfast menu. Who better to applaud your latest products than your competitor?
