BOOK REVIEW: Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

Three decades after the ghastly events at the Overlook Hotel took place, Danny Torrance (now Dan), is struggling with life. Still scarred by the events of his childhood (detailed in King’s The Shining), Dan is an alcoholic, hitting the bottom, and wandering the U.S. looking for the next place he can lay low. At his lowest point he makes a decision that will haunt him just as much as the Overlook’s otherworldly guests did all those years before. He continues his trek, hoping to escape himself, and ends up in New Hampshire, hoping to turn his life around.

At the same time, Abra Stone is born and from almost the first breath, she too “shines”.

How these two come together and who they face is the crux of King’s sequel to The Shining. Where some readers cry for an editor in King’s novels, I found Doctor Sleep to flow easily. It urged me on to the next page, revealing the world in teasing bits of details, wanting you to solve the mysteries right alongside Dan and Abra.

You won’t find the same terror here as you may have in The Shining. Instead of ghosts, the monsters here are much harder to define… but much more tangible.

Worth the read, worth the investment of time, worth the relationship you will build with the story’s leads. Stay with them. They’re worth it.
