Singing Along to Blondie and Realizing I Do Not Know the Words

Blondie: Heart of GlassEvery once in a while, I’ll hear an old Blondie song on the radio (OK, internet radio, friend humming it, etc.) and I’ll singing along.  And on these occasions I always remember that I do not actually know the words to most of the songs that Debbie Harry passionately sings.  It is on these occasions that I think to myself, “I should really look this up,” but, every time I think this I inevitably get distracted and move along to something else… perhaps a song I know the lyrics to, like something from The Muppet Movie.

Today I noticed that Blondie would be performing at Roseland Ballroom on October 4th and began humming “Heart of Glass” to myself.  My coworker joined me in humming and soon we were singing what few words we knew, which were very, very few.  “I don’t think I’ve ever actually known the words to that,” she said.  “Me neither,” I admitted and we continued to sing, mostly vowels.

Then I finally decided to look up the lyrics and see what I was not understanding all these years.

Lost inside
Adorable illusion and I cannot hide

I’m the one you’re using, please don’t push me aside
We could’ve made it cruising, yeah
Yeah, riding high on love’s true bluish light

I’m not sure that love’s true light is bluish in color, nor am I certain that anyone “could’ve made it cruising.”  But who am I to judge?

Anyhow, as an enjoyer of Blondie’s music (if not a scholar), here, for your pleasure, is the music video for “Heart of Glass”.
