In a video posted to HRC’s website, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made it clear how she feels about the question of marriage equality:
“I believe America is at its best when we champion the freedom and dignity of every human being… L.G.B.T. Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones, and they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage.”

This comes at the same time that an ABC News/Washington Post poll finds that 58% of Americans agree that gay and lesbian couples should be permitted to legally wed. That’s a huge leap from just 32% in a 2004 survey of registered voters.
Unfortunately there are still those who cannot see past their own prejudices to embrace this change. Reviewing the comments on The New York Times blog in which Ms. Clinton’s statement was shared, a large number of people argue against equality or claim it is simply a political move. For example:
Why people can’t accept that she has come to understand that it is the right thing to do is beyond me. (For reference, Mrs. Clinton expressed her opposition to same-sex marriage during a 2003 interview with John Roberts of CBS News. However, in the same interview she affirmed her support for some form of civil unions for same-sex couples.) She even alludes to her change of heart in the video, referencing her daughter’s recent nuptials, saying “I wish every parent that same joy.”
