UPDATE (March 20, 2013: 4:08PM): As Fia Fortune pointed out in the comments, the band has deleted their Facebook page. Apparently they are not interested in what their fans, or former fans, have to say about this issue. Thank you for making me aware of this change Fia!

Original Post:
On Friday, Jeremy Hooper at GoodAsYou pointed out that the group Scythian, or select members of the band, would be performing at NOM’s March for Marriage (a misnomer if I ever heard one) rally.  But, supposedly to avoid flack for their presence  the performing members chose a pseudonym and will be performing as UltraMontane.

Now the entire band has made a statement on their Facebook page letting fans know where they stand.

Many responses are from outraged people who are upset that the band would choose to participate in any event sponsored by a group that seeks to discriminate and legislate an already oppressed group into official second-class citizenship.  For example:

Then there are others who continue to argue for the side of bigotry, ignorance and intolerance.

I had my own back-and-forth with Barbi.

My response

She later scolded me for expressing my opinion that her father should be ashamed and told me that I “do not have the right to do so”.  I replied, “Barbi, you have contradicted yourself. You say I don’t have the right to express my belief that your father would be ashamed of your support of bigots but you expect me to tolerate their beliefs AND your support of them? I don’t think so. You can’t decide what rules do and don’t apply in discourse and logic.”

Many other people tried to explain this to Barbi and other people who argued for the side of anti-equality activists.  In the end (and the comments are still going), these people who claim that I and others who fight for equality are “narrow minded” are truly the narrow minded ones.  They refuse to listen to reason, to follow logic and to see that they can’t play the victim card any longer.

I encourage you to visit the comment thread and post how you feel – regardless of which side you are on.  Through civil discourse, maybe some enlightenment will happen.

march4marriageNow, if you want to support marriage for all I strongly suggest you check out (and rally around) March 4 Marriage (not to be confused with NOM’s March for Marriage).  This marriage equality campaign is trying to show just how wrong the anti-equality ideology is by sharing a message of love, regardless of gender.
