Not that any of my friends feel this way, but I’ve seen comments on various threads lately saying things like “I support Chik-fil-A because, like most Americans, I don’t like gay marriage either.” To those ignorant fools I say, believe what you will, but according to a recent study sponsored by CNN and conducted by ORC International, 54% of Americans do think marriages between gay and lesbian couples should be recognized as valid. And, granted, the U.S. has never been tops in math, but 54% is more than 50% so… yeah… I’m pretty sure that means that more Americans DO support marriage equality than don’t.
If one study doesn’t strike you as evidence, I invite you to check the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life’s research on Changing Attitudes on Gay Marriage in which it was found that, today, 47% are in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage with just 43% opposed.
The tide IS turning and the world IS changing.
In a recent Facebook post, Victoria Whiteford commented, “So they believe homosexuality is wrong. Did they ever say they would shoot, harm or not let someone eat in their restaurant because they are ? Did they ever ? No, so their not shoving religion down anyones [sic] throat.”
I replied back, “But they are giving money to organizations who are using those funds to thwart efforts to support equality… shoving their biased opinions down our throats, which is wrong. You are free to believe what you wish and to have faith in whichever God you choose. What I won’t stand for is you using that faith as an excuse to promote inequality and foster hatred. Good luck being on the losing side of history with the other bigots. My God believes in loving everyone, regardless. You can hate me for who I love but I won’t hate you. I’ll feel very sorry for you, but I won’t hate you.”
