BOOK REVIEW: Peter and the Shadow Thieves

This sequel to Peter and the Starcatchers takes a look at just who has been after the Starstuff all along, and to what length they’ll go to get it. In Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s second volume of the Starcatchers books, the shadowy form of Lord Ombra arrives on Mollusk Island looking for the starstuff from the previous story, only to be disappointed at its departure. Peter and Tink, discovering the intruders, decide they must return to England to warn Molly of this new threat. Sneaking aboard Ombra’s ship the duo ride the seas, arriving in the dark and dangerous streets of London where they encounter one chaotic adventure after another in their desperate attempt to find and save Molly from this shadow creatures encroaching threat. With the help of a new friend in George Darling, the foursome (with Lord Astor in tow) fight the malevolent “others” and risk everything to return the starstuff whence it came.

This epic adventure continues the soaring (pun intended) adventures and embellishes the already enchanting story of Peter’s origin with new and vivid experiences. It’s a must read. While “suggested” for grades 5-8, I can’t help but recommend it to anyone who has ever dreamed of flying above the trees in a swashbuckling attempt to help their friends… whether you’re in the 8th grade, or the 80th.
