I discovered the following statistics when reading the comments on Knoxnews.com’s article “Letter: Campfield shames Tennessee again”. The comment, from Tamara Shepherd, reads:
From among about 270,000 registered voters in Knox County, just 24,088 voted in the 5th and 7th District races during the County General/State Primary election (note that no 6th District primary took place on this ballot). That’s just 8.9% of total registered voters.
From among the 24,088 voters to have voted in this primary, only 7,708 of those voted for Campfield. That’s just 2.8% of total registered voters, which is worth repeating in all caps:
IT WAS ONLY 2.8% OF THE COUNTY’S TOTAL REGISTERED VOTERS WHO ELECTED CAMPFIELD.
Also note that, from among the FOUR Republican candidates in this primary, Campfield received just 39.84% of the vote. Fellow Republican Ron Ledbetter gave him a run for his money, with 36.15% of the primary vote.
Two concerning circumstances allowed just 2.8% of the county’s total registered voters to place Campfield’s name on the general election ballot:
1) An overcrowded field of Republicans in the primary allowed a candidate who DID NOT win the majority vote in the primary to nevertheless advance to the general.
2) Low voter turnout continues to plague Knox County.
In conclusion, Campfield was NOT carried to Nashville on the shoulders of 136,000 (a majority) cheering Knox County voters and there is NO groundswell of support for this idiot among Knox County voters.
