So, the Broadway blogosphere is bubbling with talk of Rob Marshall helming the film adaptation of Into the Woods and I can’t help but put my two cents in. It is a time honored tradition in theatre to speculate on the future casting of shows so here we go…
Witch: Either Catherine Zeta-Jones (who could play the darkness) or maybe Kristen Chenoweth (who could really pipe it up).
The Baker: I’m going Neil Patrick Harris all the way… or maybe Josh Radnor who was really wonderful in the recent concert-reading of She Loves Me at the Sondheim Theatre on Broadway.
Baker’s Wife: Amy Adams seems probable but Christina Applegate would be equally as charming. Although, if you want to do some stage-to-screen cross-breeding Sutton Foster could probably rock this role and would be incredibly charming opposite NPH. Just sayin’. Or, or… OR… Kristen Wiig and save Sutton for Cinderella?
Jack: Chris Colfer or any number of other Glee kids. (Note: I am done with Glee but can see them casting Colfer. He’s talented and fits the role well.) Wait, no, I love Michael Urie and want him as Jack playing opposite
Little Red Riding Hood: Amber Riley (again, from Glee, but hey, she’s got a voice and is pretty hilarious). Then plug in Monique as her Grandmother. Priceless.
Jack’s Mother: My real dream would be to have Dawn French take the role but I can also see Jane Lynch.
Steward: Patton Oswalt… done.
Cinderella: We could plug Amy Adams in here. She’s sort of the go-to girl for bubbly princessy character spots.
More contemplation to come… unless I get bored with the idea.
