Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Not sure what to expect from the story I happily grabbed Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and found myself just shy of three days later happily pleased and hungry for more.
The book is “young adult” fiction but easily engages the “regular adult” with its dark tone and nightmarish moments. Not a horror really but it have horrifying moments. Ransom Riggs is, as I later found out, a writer for Mental Floss (which I love) so it is no surprise that I enjoyed following Jacob (the protagonist) on his “peculiar” adventure from Florida to Wales in a desperate search for answers to who his grandfather was… and who the houseful of amazing children were about whom he spoke so passionately. Part sideshow and part boarding school, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (the place, not the book) is an exquisite landmark in the landscape of fantasy/adventure literature. If I could go there tomorrow I would… and I hope that another book follows soon so that I can find out what happens next (you get a stunning cliffhanger at the end).
So, pick it up, take a trip across the sea and step carefully through the bog. You will be very happy you did.
