BROADWAY BARES XXIPhoto: Andrew Eccles

This morning I called my State Senator and spoke to his aide asking her to let the Senator know that I was in full support of marriage equality and that I hoped the Senator was as well.  The kind woman confirmed that he was in full support of the measure and that he appreciated my support of him as well.

The whole thing took a total of two minutes which is why I wish more people would get proactive and do the same to voice their support.  If we don’t do act for ourselves than we are only hindering our chances at getting the world to acknowledge us as equal citizens.  To call your senator please visit the HRC’s New Yorkers for Marriage Equality page.  They’ll call YOU and connect you to the Senate switchboard.  So easy.

Now that one act of “fix this” is out-of-the-way let’s discuss another.

Sunday night, at midnight, I will be attending Broadway Bares XXI: Masterpiece at Roseland Ballroom.  This will be my first Broadway Bares (at least live) and I couldn’t be more excited.  As Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA: the producer of the event) describes it:

Broadway Bares combines the naughtiness of burlesque and the razzle-dazzle of Broadway. The event features the hottest male and female dancers on Broadway and has become one of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ signature events. The first Broadway Bares in 1992 featured seven dancers performing choreographed stripteases on a bar and $8,000. In the 20 editions so far, Broadway Bares has collectively raised more than $7.5 million.

The event helps raise money for BC/EFA programs such as the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, Actors Fund Work Program, The Dancers’ Resource, Stage Managers’ Project as well as national grants for hundreds of organizations across almost every state in the Union and many other programs as well.

I’m thrilled to have the opportunity this year to buy a ticket in support of the organization.  Not to mention the opportunity to relish in the uber-theatricality of the event in which many of Broadway’s best will strut their stuff (quite literally) on stage in an effort to support those who are struggling.
