Time Warner Cable and NOM – Advertising Discrimination

Unplugging Time Warner Cable

I was invited to this event on Facebook by a friend and, initially, thought, “Nah, I don’t need to R.s.v.p. to this. I already canceled Time Warner Cable.”  But then I read it again and realized that this was more than just canceling service.  This will send a message to Time Warner Cable that, because they took money from a group of bigots who would happily see an entire population denied the same rights as others, many people will be making a decision this Wednesday.  For full details on the event and the reasoning for it please click here.

So, in an effort to express my disdain for Time Warner Cable (again for their questionable surprise price increases and now for their willingness to take money from a group that would happily see me denied the right to love openly and freely) I am sharing the link to the event with you and posting the letter that I just sent (thanks to the  contact information that the event’s creator, Jeffrey Marx, culled together) to the Time Warner Executives including: Glenn A. Britt (Chairman & CEO – glenn.britt@twcable.com); Joel Simon (Director of Sales – joel.simon@twcable.com); Adam Rowe (Sr. Account Executive – Time Warner Media Sales, Oversees the NY1 account – adam.rowe@twcable.com); Suzanne Giuliani (Director of Public Relations – suzanne.giuliani@twcable.com) and Susan Dolan (Customer Service Manager – susan.dolan@twcable.com).

Dear Time Warner Executives,

I recently dropped my Time Warner Cable service because I felt as though I was not getting service to match the incredible cost of what I was being charged every month. I am glad I dropped my cable service when I did because, while visiting a friend, I saw an ad on NY1 (which is ONLY available on your service) and was horrified to see that you were selling air time to the National Organization for Marriage. This hate group is manipulating the media to make it appear that heterosexual couples would have their rights taken away if homosexual couples were allowed to marry. This is ludicrous and offensive. To think that you would accept money from an organization that is systematically trying to prevent equal rights for ALL is disgusting.

I saw on Facebook that a group of people are organizing on June 1, 2011 to cancel their Time Warner cable service in protest to your participation in this hate groups inane attack on LGBT people. To quote Jeffrey Marx who has organized this event and has written to you previously, “Even if you are planning on running ads that feature pro-gay sentiments, you have already done the damage. You cannot play both sides of this fence and keep your soul intact. Contributing to hate, fear, and intolerance promotes violence. People who hate gays are empowered by laws that discriminate – sometimes leading to violence. You are condoning that cycle of evil by allowing this debate on air. I was told by a gentlemen in Suzanne Giuliani’s office that you must air both sides of the debate due to free speech laws. Networks and cable providers turn down ads all the time, like during the Super Bowl. I know it’s for monetary gain, not because you are bound legally to broadcast the message against my civil rights. I would like to know more about your reasoning from a legal standpoint.”

As Mr. Marx did, I have shared your contact information with all of my friends and family on Facebook. Countless people on my friend list have reposted it as well. You have made a negative impact in our lives and we will no longer support you financially.

With regret,

W. Thomas Adkins
